Product Overview
18mm P5 Moisture Resistant Chipboard Flooring measuring 2400mm x 600mm. This high-density particleboard is engineered specifically for structural flooring applications where increased humidity or incidental moisture may occur. The panels feature precision-machined tongue-and-groove profiles on all four edges, enabling an interlocking "floating" or fixed deck that significantly reduces the risk of independent board movement and surface squeaking.
At a 18mm thickness, these boards provide a robust load-bearing sub-base suitable for domestic renovations, loft conversions, and overlaying existing uneven timber floors. The P5 classification ensures superior dimensional stability and structural integrity compared to standard P2 grades, resisting the swelling and degradation typically caused by moisture ingress during the construction phase. The 600mm width is specifically designed for ease of handling in confined spaces, such as attics or narrow corridors, while ensuring the structural integrity of the floor at a thickness of 18mm.
For projects requiring a different material composition with similar structural capabilities, 18mm OSB 3 Tongue & Groove Flooring is a suitable alternative.
Features & Benefits
- P5 moisture-resistant grade: Certified to EN 312 for load-bearing use in humid internal conditions, including kitchens and bathrooms.
- High-density particleboard: Engineered construction provides high compressive strength and resistance to structural weakening from moisture.
- Tongue-and-groove profiles: Precision-fit edges on all four sides ensure a secure, interlocking joint that minimises vertical movement between panels.
- Sanded surface finish: Provides a smooth, level face that is ready for the direct application of underlays, carpets, or laminate flooring.
- Enhanced workability: The board composition allows for clean cuts and secure fastener retention when using standard woodworking tools.
- 2400mm x 600mm dimensions: Optimised for rapid coverage and easy manual handling through standard doorways and up staircases.
- Structural 18mm thickness: Designed for installation over joists at 400mm centres or as a high-strength overlay for existing floor structures.
Applications
- Domestic structural flooring: 18mm profile serves as the primary load-bearing sub-floor for bedrooms and living areas with joist centres up to 400mm.
- Kitchen and bathroom sub-floors: P5 moisture-resistant classification prevents dimensional instability in humid environments when joints are correctly glued.
- Loft conversions: Lightweight 18mm boards provide a durable structural surface for transforming attic spaces into habitable rooms.
- Floor overlays and levelling: Used to provide a flat, stable foundation over existing floorboards in refurbishment projects before laying final floor coverings.
-
Temporary site walkways: Provides a robust, slip-resistant surface for protected pedestrian access during internal construction phases.
Installation Guidance
- Acclimatise the boards: Store panels flat in the room of installation for 48 hours to equalise moisture content with the surrounding environment.
- Check joist spacing: Ensure joists are level and spaced at maximum 400mm centres for 18mm boards to prevent excessive deflection under load.
- Apply joint adhesive: Run a continuous bead of D3 or D4 grade moisture-resistant PVA glue along both the tongue and the groove to create a silent, waterproof bond.
- Stagger the joints: Lay boards in a staggered "broken bond" pattern, ensuring that short-end joints always fall directly over a supporting joist.
- Maintain expansion gaps: Leave a minimum 10mm to 12mm expansion gap around the entire perimeter of the room and at all rigid obstructions like radiator pipes.
- Fixing intervals: Secure boards using ring-shank nails or carcass screws at 200mm intervals along supported edges and 300mm on intermediate joists.
- Countersink fasteners: Ensure all screw or nail heads are driven 2mm below the surface to prevent "grinning" through the final floor covering.
-
Seal perimeter edges: Treat all field-cut edges with a suitable wood sealant if they are likely to be exposed to moisture near plumbing or external doorways.
Compliance & Performance
- Standard classification: EN 312 P5 moisture-resistant, structural grade particleboard for internal use.
- Service class: Rated for Service Class 1 (dry) and Service Class 2 (humid) environments.
- Fire rating: Standard Euroclass D performance; can be enhanced with appropriate fire-retardant treatments or underlays.
- Environmental status: E1 formaldehyde emission compliant for safe use in domestic and commercial interior living spaces.
- Important note: While P5 grade is moisture-resistant, it is not waterproof; all standing water must be removed immediately to prevent long-term thickness swelling.
