Product Overview
Everbuild Black Jack Roofing Felt Adhesive in a 5 litre tin is a cold-applied, black, oxidised bitumen adhesive formulated for bonding roofing felt to a range of common substrates. The adhesive produces a tough, flexible film that accommodates thermal movement and maintains adhesion across seasonal temperature change.
It provides strong bonding performance on concrete, asphalt, metal, wood and existing felt, creating a consistent seal for lap joints and full-coverage bonding layers. Its resistance to dilute acids, alkalis, salt solutions, water and alcohol supports reliable performance in exposed roofing conditions, enhancing the durability of built-up felt systems.
The adhesive is also suitable for use as a cold-gritting solution, enabling the application of chippings to the final felt layer for UV protection and surface durability. Designed for brush or mop application, it develops full tack within 15-30 minutes depending on ambient drying conditions, ensuring predictable laying characteristics on site.
Stored correctly and applied in accordance with BS 8217 felt-laying principles, the adhesive supports long-term weathering performance and provides consistent results across multiple roof types.
The 5 litre capacity offers practical coverage for medium-sized roofing works and continuous-run bonding.
Features & Benefits
- Cold-applied bitumen adhesive: Provides full-coverage bonding without the need for heating equipment.
- High bond strength: Forms a durable bond suitable for securing roofing felts to typical roof substrates.
- Flexible cured film: Hardens and softens with changing temperatures to maintain adhesion and reduce stress on joints.
- Chemical and water resistance: Resists dilute acids, alkalis, salt solutions, water and alcohol for long-term exterior performance.
- Suitable for gritting: Enables application of protective chippings as a cold-gritting layer on suitable roof slopes.
- Consistent application behaviour: Brush or mop applied, with controlled tack development for reliable laying sequences.
- Material compatibility: Bonds effectively to concrete, asphalt, metal, wood and existing roofing felt.
-
Container size: 5 litre provides increased volume suited to general roof covering works and extended application areas.
Applications
- Bonding roof felts: Used to secure felt layers to wood, metal, concrete, asphalt or existing felt.
- Lap sealing: Provides reliable bonding for side and end laps in multi-layer felt systems.
- Gritting adhesive: Accepts stone chippings for UV and surface protection on low-slope roofs.
-
Roof maintenance work: Suited to localised bonding and small-area repair tasks.
Installation Guidance
- Surface preparation: Ensure substrates are clean, dry and free of loose material, grease and biological growth.
- Priming porous substrates: Apply bitumen primer where required and allow to dry fully before laying felt.
- Adhesive application: Brush or mop the adhesive evenly and allow 15-30 minutes open time to develop tack.
- Felt placement: Roll or press the felt into the wet film, ensuring full contact and removal of trapped air.
- Lap treatment: Treat edges and roll ends with adhesive, maintaining minimum 75 mm side laps and 150 mm end laps.
-
Final checks: After 24 hours, inspect all bonding and re-press any areas lacking full adhesion.
Compliance & Performance
- Chemical base: Aromatic petroleum hydrocarbon bitumen adhesive.
- Application Temperature: Air 10°C to 25°C; Surfaces must be free of ice and below 35°C.
- Service Temperature: Withstands -20°C to +70°C (once fully cured) on slopes under 10°.
- Consumption guidance: 0.6-0.8 L/m² for felt bonding; 0.7-0.9 L/m² for gritting depending on chip size.
- Drying time: Approximately 24 hours depending on conditions.
- Storage requirements: Store sealed, away from ignition sources, between 5 °C and 25 °C.
- Important note: Contains flammable solvent; avoid vapour inhalation in confined spaces and prevent contact with subsequent solvent exposure.
